Turning Concern Into Action
The SVP Conference of Our Lady’s, Portico has been a long standing feature of Parish life. At present we have 7 members with 3 auxiliary members.
Our meetings are held in the Parish House, usually around the first Tuesday of the month, after morning Mass.
Last year we made 114 house visits to people in their own homes, plus 25 visits to Parkside and Mayfield care homes.
24 visits were made to patients in hospital and lifts to hospital or Mass were also being offered.
As part of our programme at Christmas and Easter we enrol all of our clients in the Mass Crusade of the Franciscans in Dublin, giving each individual the usual Mass card of the orders Perpetual Novena,
the cost of which is borne from members own contributions at present.
We do not have regular box collections but if necessary have an ad hoc collection to replenish funds. We do of course receive donations from individuals from time to time which covers for Mass offerings for those of our clients when they die.
As part of our programme we have cooperated with our District Council in setting up a scheme to assist the families of children who are in need of support in the De la Salle Secondary School.
We received a legacy from the estate of one of our parishioners which was passed to National Office as per the rule some years ago and have donated it to other causes over the years.
Together with the local District Council we are able to put concern into action.
We are constantly seeking new members to help serve this work in our Parish.

The SVP is helping an ex offender who has been released from a Liverpool prison with virtually nothing.
The charity Restore has helped us furnish his flat but he needs a microwave.
Please ring the SVP in confidence on 07999900083 if you can help. Thanks.
